Tiwani Contemporary presents Untitled Life, a selection of wood cut and mixed media works by Ethiopian artist Ephrem Solomon. The exhibition is Solomon's debut with Tiwani Contemporary and his first in London.
With Untitled Life, Ephrem Solomon presents his observations on the city of Addis Ababa, its histories and inhabitants, resulting in works that provide both personal narratives and political ones that reach beyond Solomon's locale, speaking to a contemporary global audience. The works allude to regional instabilities and tensions - particularly the isolation of displacement and social upheaval - through the use of archival materials and repeated symbols. One notes the absence of bodies in chairs or feet in slippers. Highlighted by the ambiguity of location and pose, Solomon's 'untitled', anonymous sitters offer an indirect gaze that suggests inner struggle.
