FRIEZE LONDON 2021
Booth H24
Focus
Tiwani Contemporary is pleased to present a solo presentation of new and unseen work by multidisciplinary London-based artist Andrew Pierre Hart at Frieze London 2021. Spanning painting, sound, drawing and text, the booth marks the artist’s debut fair presentation and coincides with his first major institutional exhibition currently on view in Mixing It Up: Painting Today at the Hayward Gallery in London.
For Frieze London 2021, the artist will mount a site-specific installation, part multisensory experiment and part gesamtkunstwerk, that theatricalises a concern fundamental to his practice: the symbiotic relationship between painting and sound. Alongside a suite of new and unseen paintings, the artist will also present a soundscape (a frequently seen feature of Hart’s practice). Titled Alter-Native Trace S3:E3s and lasting 45mins, it encompasses found sound, sound experimentation and electronics including saxophone by acclaimed British musician Shabaka Hutchings and Blue Cloud (with whom the artist connected with online). In addition, the presentation of a ‘digital poem’ at the booth emerges out of Hart’s ongoing explorations of word, text, and language.
Hart will also mount the walls of the booth with a mural based on speculative, freehand drawings – presenting his subjective, retrospective connections linking the fractal geometry of Black contemporary and international music forms and material culture to genetic memory, rationalism, and empiricism.
Acting in concert, painting, sound, and text come together to offer a self-styled, unified aesthetic experience, and both become a sonic and visual riposte to conventional Western art pedagogies. Hart’s installation emphasises and underscores ideas relating to cross-modality, agency, sensory enhancement, experimentation, interdependence, and the plurality of space – revealing the possibility and vibrancy of new responses, languages, and knowledge in fraught times.
In this installation, Hart also references the American scientist and inventor of the illusion transmitter Valerie Thomas in a celebration of Black excellence – an ongoing theme in his work. Influenced by the writings of Fred Moten, Alvin Toffler, Saul Williams and the plasticity and dexterity of rap, poetry and spoken word, Hart’s work uses an artistic process akin to the bricolage-like character of ‘DJ technologies’ to effect a flexion and torsion of the language – of sound, of painting, of space.
About The Artist
Andrew Pierre Hart lives and works in London. He holds an MA in Painting from the RCA (2019) and BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts (2017).
Based on rhythmic research and play between improvised and spontaneous generative processes, Hart’s practice encompasses work that questions the many formalities and dialogues around painting. His works explore somatic responses to ideas relating to sound including but not limited to acoustic levitation, spatialization, the human as a vessel of sound and the creation of physical and theoretical space. Deeply influenced by music, Hart’s work is a renegotiation of the visual legacies of Western abstraction and figuration, probing connections between the phenomena, language, and representation of sound in painting.
He is a recipient of the Art Angel Thinking Time Award (2020) & Tiffany & Co. x Outset Studiomakers Prize (2019). Recent exhibitions include Mixing It Up: Painting Today, Hayward Gallery, London (2021); The Listening Sweet, Tiwani Contemporary, London (2021); The Abstract Truth of Things, Tiwani Contemporary (2020); Collective Intimacies at Theaster Gates' Black Image Corporation, 180 The Strand, London (2019); Royal College of Art Graduate Show (2019).
