This work is part of the series ‘You Will’, which began as a celebration of hairstyling, pineapples, and prayer. The 120+ drawings, sculpture and installations in this series explore human gesture as one of nature. Here, Ogunbiyi combines hairstyles and botanical forms to construct messages for her children and a wider public. The titles depart from prayers spoken in everyday Nigerian vernacular and meanings assigned to Yoruba hairstyles. This drawing is part of a subseries where I brainstorm around the orange hue that appears in the painting that is concurrently on view at Tiwani Contemporary Lagos. The use of Japanese ink connects to Ogunbiyi's childhood during which she studied Japanese language, culture, and caligraphy. In 2019, following her fellowship at the Smithsonian Insitute, Ogunbiyi began to create works on paper with herbarium paper only. This type of paper has been a standard size for 100s of years and has been used to mount plant specimens collected from across the globe. For Ogunbiyi, the paper represents a colonial parameters for botanical taxonomy, classification and extractive modalities of knowledge. Rather than suggest or support decolonial tactics, Ogunbiyi is interested in creating work that is in dialogue with colonial histories and textures, visuals, knowledge systems that she gleans from Caribbean and West African contexts.
