'Heated' is a painting following on from my 'Abode' series, exploring domestic environments. This painting features two images of the same person, collaged together. The figures are looking at each other, and one is on top of the other. I wanted this painting to comment on gender roles, and relationship dynamics. How one body can encompass two different mindsets and states of being. The title comes from a Beyonce song, ‘Heated’. This album really energised my new series of paintings. Coming from a long period of isolation in the pandemic, and time at home with a newborn, one of my first paintings back in the studio, I wanted to infuse the work with energy, life and movement. I tend to focus on more tender, subtle moments in my work, and I wanted this painting to signify a moment that is heated and charged. The colour palette here also speaks to this, with more intense fleshier colours perhaps than some of my other works.
