The image is based on a photograph of the artists' young cousins and their first trip to Zimbabwe to visit their grandparents. The artist has referred to this image previously, but this is the first full work of that event, its also one of a few portraits where the figures are looking towards the spectator and not in another direction/or away from. The artist liked the unification of the bodies. Aliyah's face is almost modelled out of the background, which is inspired by, Edgar Degas' work, "Woman at a Window", at The Courtauld, London. SO feels that the figure is modelled out of the shadows in contemplation.
